Save the dates are informal notices sent out to guests to "save the date" of your upcoming wedding! Basically, only a few pieces of information are necessary: your names, the date, and city of event. In some cases, the venue is mentioned if already booked. I inform my brides and grooms to send them out about 9-12 months before the big day so that guests are able to plan ahead, request time off from work, and get their flights and hotel rooms booked.
