Antica Farmacista Reed Diffusers

Written by: Liana Robertshaw, Creative Marketing Director for Antica Farmacista Love is all around us this wedding season, and some of us will be reciting our nuptials with the soft lapping of the ocean against the shore and the smell of a salty refreshing sea breeze while others will be kissing under a canopy of gorgeous flowers with sweet scents of Tuberose, Lily, and Plumeria floating through the air .  The best way to remember these fragrances from the best days of your life is to bottle them up and take them with you so you can enjoy these memories year round.

Antica Farmacista was the first company to bring the home reed diffuser to the United States from Italy back in 2003 and since we have blossomed into one of the leading luxury fragrance companies on the market.  We are excited to announce the creation of our 100ml Petit Home Ambiance Diffusers, which are the perfect wedding gift for guests traveling from both near and far, as these are also FAA approved for travel in carryon baggage, being 3.4 ounces.  Reed diffusers are the perfect alternative to flower arrangements at the reception as they provide a modern yet classy edge and each guest can take home your signature wedding scent complete with a gift tag and birch reeds to commemorate your beautiful day.

Need to know what to get the bridal party or the parents? Our beautiful crystal decanter sets come complete in Antica’s signature chocolate satin lined gift box with either a 250ml or 500ml of fragrance and birch reed sticks.  For some beautiful ambiance at the guest tables or as gifts, try our Champagne candle, made of an organic soy/paraffin blend with an all natural wick that allows for 50 hours of a clean, sensuous burn.

While a reed diffuser can’t replace flowers when walking down the aisle, it can give guests something unique and modern to remember your wedding by.

Vendor Spotlight: Sam Day Wedding Painter

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of working with Sam Day on a beautiful wedding out at Reflection Bay, Lake Las Vegas. Two weeks before the wedding, the bride ask me if I knew of an artist to paint the scene of her wedding. Her inspiration: personalized M&M candies with their faces on them.  Somehow the purchase of these personalized M&M candies prompted her to think about having someone paint her wedding live.

Thank you to Andy Ebon for referring the awesomely talented Sam Day to us (via Facebook)! On a side note, please check out Andy's post on The Art of the Virtual Referral.

Enjoy Sam's interview:

Name: Sam Day Location: Seattle Company Name: The business license still says Sam Day - Illustrator Number of Years in Business: Since '92 as an illustrator, since '04 as a wedding painter Website: www.samday.com Blog: www.samdayweddingpainter.blogspot.com

How did you get started in wedding/event painting? A groom called me a week before his wedding, saying he had a great idea for a gift for his bride. He actually made 75 phone calls looking for someone willing to do it. A professor at the University of Washington told him he would not be able to find anyone who could paint that fast. I took that as a dare.

What did you do prior to this? I've done everything from storyboards for advertising to cartoons for Readers' Digest.

If you didn't do wedding/event painting for a living what would you be doing instead? I've got some grand manner paintings in progress in the studio.

What are some of your hobbies? Open water swimming, singing tenor in the church choir, trying to teach my golden retriever to fetch under water.

What is the craziest wedding experience you've ever had? That would be the time the groom got into a knock down fight with his mother in law.

What is the best wedding experience you've ever had? My own.

What is your inspiration? Lately, the Russian painter Ilya Repin. He could paint a whole crowd in real time, and every brush stroke was perfect.

Name an exotic location you'd like to visit soon. Thailand.

Why do your clients choose you over some of your competitors? In the amount of time allotted to paint a wedding, my competitors and I all struggle to get more detail than mere stick figures. My clients often express amazement that I can produce a likeness if not of every guest, at least of the bride and groom. (I owe this to 20 years of doing caricatures in under a minute apiece.) I also keep hearing them say the result reminds them of Renoir.

What is the best piece of advice you can offer a bride and groom on their wedding day? Accept each others' flaws, and express gratitude and praise for each other daily.

Anything else interesting you'd like to share? I intend to get a lot better at this over time.

Things I Miss About San Francisco

sanfran To celebrate a successful spring 2009 wedding season, my husband and I will be taking a 5 day vacation to Napa Valley and San Francisco.

Because of this, I wanted to write about something personal for a change so that you can get a glimpse of my background.

I was raised in San Francisco.  Not San Jose, not Daly City, or any other "Bay Area" cities.   Often times, people will say they're from San Francisco when they mean the general Bay Area. Nope, I'm actually from the city of San Francisco and proud of it!

Here are some things I miss about San Francisco: 1. The street with the steps - can't remember the street name. 2. Cable cars. They are called Cable Cars. Not trolleys. 3. The view from my high school - George Washington High School. Danny Glover and Maya Angelou graduated from this school! 4. Union Square 5. The view of Golden Gate Bridge 6. Good Chinese food that doesn't break the bank 7. Being able to see water…if I wanted to 8. Walking somewhere 9. Chinatown 10. Some of my friends 11. Living in a city with a real "downtown"

What I don't miss about San Francisco 1. Small homes with a ridiculous mortgage although I currently live in a small home with a ridiculous mortgage 2. State tax 3. My mom having to take the bus to work 4. Living in the city, even though I'm a city girl

Although I miss San Francisco, I don't ever plan on moving back.  But one day, I hope to plan a wedding in San Francisco!  I would love to plan a wedding at the San Francisco City Hall or the Westin St. Francis!

Raise the Cake: Cake Stands

An exciting email came to my inbox the other day: Wedding and event planner Kathy Jo Peterson has introduced a new company called Raise the Cake.  Choose from her pre-designed collection of cake stands or create a custom cake stand.

I am so excited and I'm looking forward to introducing these cake stands to future brides and grooms!

Sam Day - The Wedding Painter

My bride asked me if I knew of any painters who could paint the scene of her wedding.  I didn't.  So I posted a quick Facebook status update seeking help!  Andy Ebon of The Wedding Marketing Blog responded and referred me over to the amazingly talented Sam Day out of Seattle. We were less than two weeks away from the wedding so the bride made a quick decision and decided to hire Sam Day.  I'm thrilled!  Tomorrow is the big day and I can't for Digs Studio to capture all the lovely details so that I can share them with you all!

Vendor Spotlight: Julie Anne's

Name: Julie Anne Hession Location: Private studio off of Sunset in Las Vegas (call for tastings and consultations)

Company Name: Julie Anne’s Number of Years in Business: 3 (2 years operated as a bakery/café; 1 year as a boutique cake decorator/caterer)

Website: www.julieannes.com Blog: www.peanutbutterandjulie.com

Twitter: @julieanneslv

How did you get started in pastry arts? I have been baking for as long as I can remember.  Having discovered a passion for pastry at a very young age, I spent countless hours in the kitchen, whipping up desserts for family and friends.  My “schooling” consisted of poring over cookbooks, experimenting with various ingredients and techniques on my own, and of course some invaluable tips from mom.  It eventually occurred to me that I should follow this passion and turn my love of baking into a livelihood.

What did you do prior to this? Before I started Julie Anne’s, I was a graduate school student at Duke University in North Carolina.  Although I have lived in Las Vegas since 1992, I decided to go to Duke to get my MBA, which has been a valuable asset for running my business.  The decision to attend Duke ended up being a good one for many reasons—that’s where I met my husband!

If you didn't design cakes and pastries for a living what would you be doing instead? I’m pretty sure that I would still be doing something food-related.  I’ve done a little bit of food writing on the side, and I also publish a blog, which I really enjoy, so I think that I would be a full-time food writer and cookbook author.

What are some of your hobbies? I like to keep fit (this helps when you are surrounded by sweets on a daily basis!), so I take Bikram yoga classes, I run, and I love to go hiking when my schedule permits.  I also enter cooking contests--my highlight so far was winning a Food Network cake competition last year. My husband and I own two rescue dogs, and I am a true animal-lover.  We also enjoy traveling and trying new restaurants and types of cuisine.

What is the craziest wedding experience you’ve ever had? When I owned my bakery/café, I booked two weddings on the same day.  Not only did we make the wedding cakes, but most of the food as well. Both clients were good customers at the store, and I didn’t want to turn them down.  Little did I know that the weddings would be held at the same time on completely opposite sides of town.  We ended up shutting down the café for the day so that the entire staff could focus on the weddings (we provided complimentary pastries and coffee outside for customers who did not know that we were closed).  I positioned my strongest people at one wedding, and I started out at the other wedding.  Once everything was secure there, I hurried to the other side of town to attend to the other wedding.  It’s a miracle that none of the food or logistics was mixed up.  Both weddings worked out beautifully, but I have never been so exhausted in my entire life!

What is the best wedding experience you’ve ever had? The first wedding that I ever did, purely because I felt the greatest sense of accomplishment after the cake had been successfully delivered to a smiling bride-to-be.  I recall being extremely nervous throughout the process.  Will I finish on time?  Will the cake look right?  Will the couple be happy?  Fortunately, the answer to each of these questions was “Yes”!

What is your inspiration? I am inspired every day from things that I see, articles that I read, and even from people who I meet.  Sometimes I will see a unique color combination in a beautifully decorated house, and I will think “Hmmm…..that would look beautiful on a cake.”  If I find a delicious-sounding pie recipe in a magazine, I might try to turn that concept into a cake flavor. I also look at what other cake designers around the world are doing to get ideas for shapes, patterns, and borders.  Last but certainly not least, I am inspired by my clients, as their ideas and personalities help to form the foundation of my designs. Name an exotic location you’d like to visit soon. I’ve heard wonderful things about Turks and Caicos, and the photos that I’ve seen have been beautiful.  It looks like the perfect place for those who really want to escape! Why do your clients choose you over some of your competitors? Because we are a smaller business, I take ownership of and am personally involved with each and every project that I do, from the initial consultation to the delivery.  As a result, I feel a great sense of responsibility for each order, and I pride myself on being a perfectionist with an eye for detail.  Another benefit that we offer is our flexibility.  If you don’t see your favorite flavor listed, we can create a flavor for you.  Julie Anne’s also does custom sculpted cakes and personalized cookies, so we can serve as “one stop shopping” for wedding cakes, groom’s cakes, and party favors!

What is the best piece of advice you can offer a bride and groom on their wedding day? Don’t be afraid to ask for the things that you want, and don’t let other people convince you that you want something else.  Remember that your wedding is about both of you, so don’t plan your celebration to please other people.  If you love pistachio, then make (at least part of) your cake pistachio!  Honor your family and friends with a special toast, personalized favors, or a thank-you note.  The best way for guests to enjoy themselves during a wedding celebration is by seeing that the bride and groom are enjoying their special day!

Great Ideas for Summer Weddings

Las Vegas is hot, hot, hot!  This is the desert and summer starts in late April and ends in September or maybe even in the beginning of October depending on the year.  So, our slow wedding season is usually in July and August because of extreme heat. Still, there are many brides and grooms looking to get married in May when it's in the 90s (Fahrenheit).  Heck, I've got two weddings in August this year!

Despite the Las Vegas heat, brides always tell me that they'd love a beautiful outdoor wedding (myself included who had a July wedding ceremony outside!!).  They also ask me for unique ways to help their guests cope with the heat.

Water bottles or water stations and fans are obvious solutions but what other creative ways are there to make your guests a little more comfortable?

How about a refreshing summer cocktail or a lemonade stand as a pre ceremony cocktail hour?  Flip flops for the ladies? A summer inspired menu? Tray passed popsicles?  The possibilities are endless!

Two weeks ago, I planned a wedding where there were many many surprises (more on that wedding once I get the photos).  I suggested a gelato bar for the end of the wedding and the bride and groom LOVED the idea!

I've also got a wedding next week where the bride wanted an ice cream bar.  The catering manager at the venue referred me over to Ben and Jerry's for a mobile ice cream bar!  In the end, she decided against it because she had enough sweets with a chocolate fountain, a sweets table, etc.  But I would love to suggest this for another summer wedding because it is so cost effective!  I wish I had known it was so cost effective. I would have booked that Ben & Jerry's mobile ice cream cart for my own wedding. My husband and his father (who owned an ice cream shop years ago) would've been in heaven!

What are some of your ideas for summer weddings?

How did you get started in this business? About 10 years ago, I started driving one of the 1st mega-stretch SUVs in Las Vegas.  My background before that was as a fine dining waiter, so I was able to bring my customer service skills to the transportation industry and I quickly built a very loyal clientele base.

If you didn't do this for a living what would you be doing instead? Lounging on a beach somewhere, but since that's not really an option...I've become quite passionate about our efforts to protect our environment, so I really do believe that I'm right where I  belong. What are some of your hobbies? Training Jui-Jitsu and various martial arts and hanging out with my Baby Girl.

What is your inspiration? Being able to provide employment and make a little bit of a difference in one of the toughest economic crisis' of our time.  Knowing that I have so many people depending on me is what drives me to succeed everyday.

Name an exotic location you'd like to visit soon: Would love to visit Italy and Greece.

Why do your clients choose you over some of your competitors? We provide unparalleled customer service.  I feel like many of my competitors have lost that extra touch that makes such a huge difference in the overall experience that the customer is looking for.  What is the best piece of advice you can offer a bride and groom on their wedding day?  Make sure that you research the vendors that you choose on one of the most important days of your life.  These are the people that can "make or break" your big day.  Choose people that genuinely have YOUR best interest at heart.

Anything else interesting you'd like to share? U.S. EPA Honors 3 Nevada Environmental Heroes- Earth Limos was one of them.  You can follow this link to read more about it.

Lou was presented with a Certificate of Sentatorial Recognition as an Environmental Hero yesterday from Senator John Ensign.  The award says: congratulations on receiving the 2009 EPA Environmental Award for creating and establishing your company, Earth Limos, the first and only eco-friendly transportation company in Las Vegas.  I commend you on your business acumen, your ingenuity, and- most importantly-your commitment to the preservation of the precious natural resources of our community, our state, and our nation.

Guest Blogger: Chelsea of Superior Wedding Rings

Chelsea of Superior Wedding Rings shares her knowledge of the metal "Tungsten" that was introduced to the jewelry industry just a few years ago.

The ring has been used as a symbol of commitment and love from the beginning of time.  That is why it is so important to choose a ring that will last the years.  Because of this, tungsten rings have become increasingly popular among couples.  Tungsten alone is a very dense and fragile metal. When tungsten is combined with carbon alloys at over 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit, Tungsten Carbide (TC) is formed- one of the hardest metals known to mankind.

Although Tungsten has been used for many years in the manufacturing industry for tools and other workmanship, Tungsten was introduced to the jewelry industry just a couple of years ago. Our Tungsten Carbide rings do NOT contain the alloy cobalt. Although cobalt allows for easier production, it reacts with the natural oils in our skin and will cause oxidation on the ring. (Beware of Tungsten jewelry containing cobalt. They are not scratch resistant and will oxidize shortly.) This indestructible alloy is virtually impossible to scratch, and holds its shine for decades!

Here are some interesting facts that will put into perspective the quality of Tungsten Carbide- Tungsten Carbide is approximately ten times harder than 14K gold, and four times harder than platinum! This innovative new product has become the hottest trend in today’s market.  We also offer a large selection of rings made of many different materials on our site at www.superiorweddingrings.com.

My husband's replacement ring (he lost his original wedding ring but thank goodness for insurance!) is made from Tungsten and it is beautiful and does not scratch!

Winner of our Wedding Coordination Giveaway!

lvsign2

Congratulations to Amber & Bill on winning our Wedding Coordination Giveaway!  Take a look at their story below!

Bill and Amber met in fall of 2001 in that most romantic place, the internet. Bill happened upon Amber’s blog and was taken with her style, wit, and humor. He e-mailed Amber and they haven’t gone a day without talking since.

Amber visited Bill in New York City in the summer of 2002. They had a great time taking in the sights, but more importantly, they decided to make a go at a relationship. For five long years, they were a distance couple. Though time zones separated them, they never missed one last phone call to wish each other good night. In autumn of 2007, Amber moved to New York to begin life with Bill. All because of a chance online encounter.

On September 4, 2008, Bill proposed at Walt Disney World's Chefs de France restaurant. It was Amber's birthday, and she was wearing a happy birthday button. Throughout the day, cast members wished her well, even giving her a free cupcake at lunch. So when the entire restaurant staff came to sing to her, she didn't suspect that Bill had called ahead to order a special "will you marry me?” cake. Amber said yes, just in time for the nightly fireworks show. Bill passed his camera to a quick thinking waitress, who shot this video.

Their wedding theme invokes the glamour of “Hollywood’s Playground,” Las Vegas during the late 1950s. Average folks rubbed elbows with the stars, saw headliners like Frank and Dean, and ate dollar prime rib. They love this special and more innocent time when it was ok for a fella to go crazy in the head over a broad. Bill would never dare call Amber a “broad,” but he loves her with that same spirit. The couple wants their guests to raise their highballs for a revival of the Ring-a-Ding-Ding era.

Amber is a perfectionist, and is worried about being too consumed by details to enjoy her own wedding. She knows that with the right help, the day will be what the Chairman of the Board would have called “a real gas.”

Wedding Date: October 3, 2009 Ceremony – Guardian Angel Cathedral Reception – Red Rock Hotel

Green Orchid Events is looking forward to Amber and Bill's wedding day!

Hiring Your Wedding Photographer

photograph

As a wedding planner, my job is to narrow down the LONG list of professional photographers for my brides and grooms based on their style, budget, AND personalities.  However, once the list is narrowed down, it is their job to meet with the few photographers either in person or over the phone. I've already recommended the photographers that fit their style and budget; the next test is the personality test.  Just as I am not the planner for every wedding, a wedding photographer cannot be the photographer for every bride and groom. The good photographers may disagree with me on this but sometimes personalities just clash!

Unfortunately I didn't take my own advice on my wedding day.  While planning my wedding, I was referred to a lovely photographer by the name of Candace Simpson of Elegant Images.  We visited her studio and LOVED her photos and her warm personality.  There was one problem. She had a family trip planned and her return date to Las Vegas was on my wedding date!  How dare she! She tried every possible way to change her return date to the day before my wedding but it didn't work out.  She offered to have her assistant shoot my wedding but I was hesitant.  Knowing what I know now and the fact that her assistants are amazing, I would have hired them in a heartbeat.

So...who did I hire? I had three months to plan my wedding so I called the photographer that I saw many years ago at the Bridal Spectacular because his work was stunning and I didn't have time to do the research. However, all the red flags were there:  the non stop reminder that I needed to submit payment before the date was secured (and trust me, I was making my deposits pretty quickly with only three months to plan), the uneasiness in my stomach whenever I called him, the dull personality that he possessed, and his general lack of care.  I didn't listen to my instincts and in the end I was very unhappy with him - not my photos - him.

On a happier note, I recently had two amazing experiences with photographers.  Candace, the photographer I didn't hire for my wedding ended up becoming one of my friends and we did an awesome bridal shoot. Check out photos here.  I also recently did a photoshoot with Adam from Imagine Photography.  I met Adam recently when he decided to branch off on his own and start his own company. One of my wedding coordinators Angelica and I talked with him for 3 hours during our first meeting!  These two photographers have everything you'd want in a wedding photographer - talent AND personality.

You see, it is so much more than just looking at the photographs when interviewing photographers.  Sure, it is absolutely important that you see their work and their product but there are so many amazing photographers out there. Ask yourself these questions when you're looking to hire your wedding photographer:

Would I enjoy an afternoon with this photographer over a cup of coffee? Do I feel at ease when I pick up the phone to call this photographer? Is this photographer passionate about photography? Does this photographer seem genuinely interested in me or is this "just another wedding" for them?

If their photos are gorgeous and they don't meet the personality requirements, move on.  Personally, I love a photographer who is outgoing, bubbly, likes to have fun, likes to laugh and can make me laugh.  Some people may not care for this and want a more serious personality.  Hire someone you feel comfortable with and trust your instincts because it's usually correct.

Happy planning!

In high school I was the Student Body 2nd Vice President in charge of events ie prom, homecoming, sadies, powder puff football and through that experience I found that I loved events and know thats what I wanted to do professionally.  I enrolled in The International School of Hospitality to become a certified wedding coordinator and did an internship with the Wedding Salons at the Wynn Resorts. Shortly after completing that program I was looking to become involved in the wedding industry any way I could get my foot in the door. In the mean time I enrolled in a beginning floral design class at CSN. Upon the suggestion of a friend to email bridal gown stores I emailed Anna Wilson at Something Blue to see if she were looking for any help. Fortunately for me she was extremely busy with the floral aspect of the company and was willing to teach me floral. In addition to Anna teaching me I continued to take classes at CSN not only for Floral Design but also Interior Design and Business. Since than for me it has been an upward climb, I started by assisting with Anna and have worked my way up to being manager and lead designer for the company.

What did you do prior to this? I was working at Friendly Ford as a phone operator.

If you didn't do floral design for a living what would you be doing instead? I think I would either be doing general wedding coordination or a personal assistant, I've always thought it would be a fun job.

What are some of your hobbies? I love to travel, go shopping, and go on adventures!

What is the craziest wedding experience you’ve ever had? I had this couple come meet with me about centerpieces for their reception held at an upscale restaurant in one of the strip casinos. The flowers were very important to the bride and she wanted to make sure the groom also had a say in what we were doing for them. I spent quite a bit of time with this couple coming up with designs that were not only in the brides favorite colors but also accented the room appropriately. The Friday before the Saturday wedding I went over everything with the bride and made sure she didn't need anything else. The day of the wedding myself and a couple other designers spent the morning putting together their elaborate pieces, loaded them into the truck and we were off to the wedding. We unloaded the car and had to have 3 bell men carts to get to the venue. I walk up to the hostess and tell her we were there to set up the reception and gave her the bride and grooms names. Her response to me was that the wedding was canceled, it took her 3 or 4 times of repeating it until I realized she wasn't just joking with me.  After 20  minutes standing around dumbfounded and shocked, we were finally able to get the  mother of the bride on the phone and were told they didn't care what we did with the flowers and that the bride did not want to see them. So we loaded them back into the car and took them to a hospice to enjoy. Apparently the night before at the bachelor party things got a little out of hand.

What is the best wedding experience you’ve ever had? I have worked with so many great couples but recently I had a couple who were pretty outstanding. The bride originally came in looking for a dress and than later brought her groom to talk about flowers. During one of our meetings I brought out a large cylinder to show them the size we were talking about and ended up breaking it, the groom insisted that he cleaned it up because I had on sandals. Right up to the wedding the every time I spoke with the bride she was extremely nice and was always excited about her upcoming event. On the day of the wedding although there was so much stuff going on both the bride and the groom took the time to thank us and let us know how happy they were with their flowers. After the wedding when I went back to clean up to my surprise the couple were still there and again took the time to tell me how much they liked everything. It makes you feel good when you put your heart into the work you do for your clients and than hear how happy they are. So often people talk about the "bridezillas" that it seems that the brides like this one sometimes go unrecognized.

What is your inspiration? I think the inspiration comes from all kinds of places. Like Anna says, "Anytime you look at a patch of weeds, there is always one single beautiful flower growing amidst the scraggly chaos, which symbolizes growth, hope and strength" We try to take things that may not be conventionally beautiful and bring its beauty out. It may be a container that is a little sad on its own, or a flower that is kind of homely on its own but when we're done with it, it is a masterpiece. To us we find that out of the box thinking very inspiring.

Name an exotic location you’d like to visit soon. I would love to see Fiji!

Why do your clients choose you over some of your competitors? I think alot of our clients appreciate our style and our high standards for customer service. We actually have a definition for ourselves we use allot to describe us, Weeds (verb) An Action. A Stance. A talent for taking over the expected or "planted" to be a free and profound voice in a crowd of average. We strive to offer our clients something different, something extraordinary that people will look at and be blown away by. When you book your wedding with us, you have our full attention. We never book more than one wedding a day. It's their special day and they deserve to be treated special by everyone involved not just on the day of the event but through the whole planning process.

What is the best piece of advice you can offer a bride and groom on their wedding day? When picking your vendors, find vendors you trust and than trust them. You're paying them for their talents and services, this is what they do, this is what they know, and in most cases this is what they love.
